Description from the seller
Nicola (Nello) Canzanella – "Scorcio Rustico Campano" – Oil on Canvas – Neapolitan School of the XX Century
I present at auction a painting of excellent warmth and luminous sensitivity, created by master Nicola Canzanella (also known as Nello Canzanella), a respected and celebrated exponent of the Neapolitan figurative school of the second half of the 20th century.
Canzanella is an artist deeply tied to the Campanian landscape tradition, capable of inheriting the great lesson of Italian Post-Impressionism and the historic School of Resin, guiding it toward a material modernity with strong visual impact. The work bears the artist’s autograph signature in the lower left corner "N. Canzanella", traced with the characteristic fluid script that marks his most successful and sought-after works by collectors.
Stylistic Analysis, Landscape and the Knife-Painting Technique. The Iconography of the Mediterranean Landscape
The painting tackles the theme of landscape and rural glimpses, a central, lyrical and recurring subject throughout the author’s entire production: The Foreground: The composition describes a country path that runs alongside a picturesque stone farmhouse. The ancient architecture is enhanced by a distinctive arched structure, enriched with rustic details and with spontaneous vegetation climbing the walls. The Background: Beyond the farmhouse, the viewer’s eye is deftly guided toward a stretch of hillside coastline that stands on the horizon, instantly recalling the atmospheres, colors and views typical of the inland coastal area of Campania and the Mediterranean.
From an execution standpoint, the canvas fully reflects Canzanella’s very personal and vigorous language. The application is distinguished by a richly dense, vibrant, and tactile impasto. The work was created by skilfully combining the use of the brush with decisive spatula painting. The artist does not merely lay down color; he literally "sculpts" the volumes of the stone, the roughness of the ground, and the texture of the vegetation. The warm, typically southern sunlight is captured precisely by the reliefs of the material left by the spatula, producing a chiaroscuro play and a visually dynamic quality of the highest merit.
An element of exceptional collectible value that elevates the desirability of this specific lot is the presence of an additional autograph signature on the back of the panel. This second signature, personally written by the artist, serves as a formal and definitive archival seal that validates and guarantees the absolute authenticity of the work, offering the future buyer and the platform’s experts maximum transparency and historical certainty.
Technical Sheet of the Lot. Artist: Nicola (Nello) Canzanella (Neapolitan School of the XX Century). Title of the Work: "Rustico" (Rural glimpse of Campania). Technique: Oil on board (Pictorial material with spatula and brush). Style: Post-Impressionism / Material Landscape in Put‑Put? (Note: kept as intended) Partenopean. Signature: Double autograph signature (on the front lower left "N. Canzanella" and an additional validation signature on the back). Dimensions of the canvas: about 45 x 55 cm.
The work is presented in generally good conservational condition. The paint film is perfectly intact, solid, and shows no cracking or onset of color loss; the material reliefs and the spatula transitions desired by the artist are preserved in their original state. The warm earth tones and stone maintain the brightness and vitality of the first day. The painting is ready to be placed in a collection and displayed.
Please carefully examine the extensive attached photographic gallery to appreciate in detail the three-dimensional quality of the spatula, the signature on the front, and the validation signature placed on the back. The frame is being donated free of charge and does not affect the value of the work.
I guarantee logistics of good safety standards to preserve the canvas’s integrity during transport: The painting will be isolated with bubble wrap and other materials and placed in a shipping carton. It will be entrusted exclusively to a leading international express courier (DHL / UPS / FedEx) with a tracking code provided immediately after the lot leaves. The shipment will travel with full insurance coverage for the total winning value, ensuring a transparent transaction and absolute peace of mind for the buyer.
