Description from the seller

38 cm with base
PROVENANCE:
- Private collection inherited from a Frenchman who traveled in Central Africa in the 1960s-70s.
Having participated in public health missions in remote villages, André was thus sensitized to Primitive art, its forms and uses.
As was often the custom, services rendered were thanked with gifts upon departure, among which masks, statues and other meaningful objects.
The collection of several dozen pieces was also complemented by on-site purchases in Bujumbura in particular, as well as in France later on. -

Chokwe masks, originating from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are among the most recognizable in African art. Sculpted in dense woods such as mukula or mututi, they are distinguished by their realistic features, half-closed eyes, an often slightly open mouth, and elaborate hairstyles, sometimes adorned with geometric motifs or scarifications.

These masks typically embody ancestors, spirits or power figures, and play a central role in initiation ceremonies, funerals or rites of passage. Their surface is carefully polished and covered with a smooth patina, sometimes tinted with natural pigments like kaolin or ochre, to reinforce their sacred dimension.

In Chokwe tradition, masks are used to convey moral teachings, celebrate the memory of the deceased, or invoke the protection of spirits. Their manufacture, reserved for initiated craftsmen, follows a rigorous process, respecting the symbolic and spiritual rules of the community.
Today, these masks are also recognized for their artistic value, illustrating the balance between realism and symbolism in African art. Each piece remains a living testimony to the Chokwe beliefs and history.
