Large pair of porcelain vases from the Republic of China (Minguo) - Decoration with Buddhist Lions (Foo Dogs) and Calligraphy - H:43cm
Important and scenographic pair of large Chinese porcelain vases from the Republic period (Minguo, dated 1939).
The vases feature a slender body, finely decorated on one side in iron-red enamel depicting a lively scene with Buddhist Lions (Fu Dogs / Shishi), traditional symbols of protection and prosperity, captured as they play with the embroidered sphere. The painting stands out for the great dynamism of the strokes and the expressiveness of the faces. The shoulders are embellished with pairs of handles in the shape of mythical animal heads with a movable ring, also finished in iron red.
The opposite side hosts a rich black ink calligraphic inscription, enriched with red notes at the neck. The calligraphy bears a poetic inscription, the cyclical dating (corresponding to 1939, year YiMao) and the famous reference to the Zhushan area (Pearl Mountain) in Jingdezhen. The work is completed by the artist’s signature and the related red seal.
The bases of the vases are unglazed (rough foot), showing a compact porcelain body, coherent with the manufacture of the period.
Technical Details (
Era: Republic of China (Minguo), dated 1939.
Material: Hand-painted porcelain in iron-red and calligraphy in black.
Height: 44 cm each.
Subject: Chinese Guardian Lions and Zhushan poetic calligraphy.
Condition Report
The pair remains in very good structural condition for its age, with no restorations or cracks. The following historical manufacturing details are noted:
1. Vase 1 (Mouth): Exhibits a slight manufacturing asymmetry on the upper rim (opening not perfectly circular / slightly warped rim from firing), a typical feature of artisanal firing of the period.
2. Vase 2 (Body): Shows small firing spots / impurities underglaze scattered on the body, natural and consistent with manufacturing processes of the era.
3. General: Minimal and normal signs of wear on the surface consistent with age.
All the described details are clearly visible in the attached photographs, which form an integral part of the lot description.
