Antique Valencian botijo from Sagunto, made of brass and bronze, with a height of 21 cm and a width of 22 cm, in good condition with original patina and a hand‑engraved inscription dated 1928.
Description from the seller
Old traditional Valencian botijo known as “colcho,” made of natural cork with bronze and brass elements. It is complete with its two stoppers. It has not been restored, nor “made up,” only conserved and preserved so that its century of existence is reflected in its original condition.
It preserves an original patina on the metal, the result of the passage of time, which has not been polished, altered, or embellished, and the signs of use consistent with its age and use.
This piece stands out for the decorative simplicity typical of everyday objects, where functionality takes precedence over ornament. A cultural trait that today lends it its authentic character and ethnographic value.
What makes this piece special is not only its age but its deeply personal character: it retains a hand-engraved inscription on the metal hoop with the date “ year 1928” and some initials. The irregular stroke typography, probably made with a metal pen, served as a symbol of permanence and belonging. This type of marking was common as a property sign, imprinting a unique character and a direct connection with its former owner, turning a utilitarian item into something intimate, tied to a concrete history, functioning almost as a signature or material memory.
Furthermore, as you can see in the photographs, some rivets on the base were replaced by old screws, reflecting its long use and adding authenticity to the piece.
This type of botijo is a very specific craft from the Sagunto area (Valencia) and its origin is linked to rural life: farmers and field workers needed sturdy containers to keep water cool during the day.
Ideal for collectors, ethnography, rustic-industrial decoration, or pieces with a history.
Measurements:
Height: 21 cm
Diameter: 22 cm
