Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Like the pink variety thulite, it is used exclusively as a gemstone.
As zoisite crystallizes, tanzanite forms in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and show a glassy luster on the surfaces. Cleavage planes, on the other hand, shimmer more pearlescent.
