Description from the seller
Olympus 35-S II + E.Zuiko F.C. 4.8cm 1:2.8 — Classic 1950s Working 35mm Rangefinder, No Battery Required
A working Olympus 35-S II — a beautifully made Japanese 35mm rangefinder camera from the late 1950s, fitted with the highly regarded E.Zuiko F.C. (Tessar-derived 6-element) 4.8cm f/2.8 fixed lens. Introduced in 1957 as an updated version of Olympus's first rangefinder model (the 1955 Olympus 35-S), the 35-S II features improved bright-frame finder optics — recognizable by the three windows across the front of the body. A true mechanical classic that requires NO BATTERY whatsoever and is ready to load with film and shoot today.
Including:
- Camera body (Olympus 35-S II)
- Fixed E.Zuiko F.C. 4.8cm 1:2.8 lens (built-in)
(No battery required — this camera is fully mechanical and has no electronic components)
Appearance:
Vintage cosmetic wear consistent with age (1950s camera). Some patina and small spots on the chrome top plate; leatherette body covering is intact with no peeling. The viewfinder and rangefinder windows are clear. No major dents or serious damage.
Function:
35mm coupled-rangefinder camera with Copal MXV leaf shutter (B, 1 s – 1/500 s), bright-frame viewfinder with parallax-corrected frame lines, coupled rangefinder for accurate focusing, M/X flash synchronization with PC socket, mechanical self-timer, and an exposure value (LV) reference disc built into the back door (a non-electronic calculator dial — useful as a reference for outdoor exposure based on season, time of day, and ASA).
- Shutter: fires correctly (confirmed)
- Shutter speed ring: operates
- Film advance lever: operates (confirmed)
- Rewind crank: operates (confirmed)
- Rangefinder coupling: focusing ring moves smoothly, double-image patch visible in viewfinder
- Aperture ring (f/2.8 – f/22): operates, smooth click stops
- Self-timer: present
- Flash sync (M/X): operates
No battery is required for any function of this camera. The Olympus 35-S II is a fully mechanical rangefinder with no light meter and no electronic components — a major advantage for vintage shooters who want to avoid hunting for discontinued battery types.
Optical system (lens):
E.Zuiko F.C. 4.8cm 1:2.8 — a six-element (Tessar-derived) Olympus lens widely praised for its sharpness and pleasing image rendering, considered one of the finest fixed-lens designs of its era. Optics are clear — no fungus, no haze, no balsam separation, and no major scratches visible in the photos. A small amount of dust may be present but does not affect image quality. Aperture blades are clean and operate correctly.
Shutter / film chamber:
The Copal MXV leaf shutter blades appear clean. The film chamber and pressure plate are clean overall.
Notes:
The Olympus 35-S series is historically significant as Olympus's first 35mm coupled-rangefinder line, and it is considered the predecessor of the legendary Olympus 35 SP. A genuine 1950s mechanical Japanese rangefinder with a 6-element f/2.8 lens, ready to use without sourcing any specialized batteries. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition. As this is a 1950s camera, occasional servicing (CLA) is recommended for long-term reliable use.
