Description from the seller

Large Hand-Painted 'Blauw Delfts' Ginger Jar – De Distel – In excellent condition – No reserve.
A Majestic Museum-quality piece.

This monumental ginger jar is a true eye-catcher, showcasing the timeless elegance of Dutch Blue and White pottery. Sourced from a private collection, the jar features a classic baluster shape topped with a domed lid and a stylized finial. The surface is richly adorned with hand-painted floral motifs, including lush peonies and intricate scrollwork, characteristic of high-end Delftware. This is a heavy quality ceramic piece that serves as a sophisticated focal point for any interior.

The tradition of Delft Blue (Delfts Blauw) dates back to the 17th century, when Dutch potters sought to emulate the blue and white porcelain imported from China. De Distel (The Thistle), established in Amsterdam in 1895, became famous for its high-quality Art Nouveau and traditional designs, often blending classic themes with modern craftsmanship. This ginger jar represents a museum-quality piece from the mid-20th century revival of hand-painted ceramics. The "Distel" mark is a sign of authenticity and artisanal skill, representing a historically correct link to the heritage of Dutch ceramic excellence.

Dimensions: 30 x 17 x 17 cm (h x w x d)

Material: Hand-painted Earthenware / Ceramic

Markings: "Blauw Delfts - Distel - SCR. Handpainted - Made in Holland"

Style: Traditional Dutch Delftware

This ginger jar is in good vintage condition. Please note that a small piece has broken off from the inner upper rim of the main vase body, which is clearly documented in the top-down. This minor imperfection is completely concealed from view when the lid is in place. Aside from this, there are no cracks, no dents, and no visible chips to the exterior base. It has been professionally cleaned to preserve the brilliance of the cobalt blue glaze. The colors remain vibrant and the glaze is smooth, with fine, age-appropriate glaze crazing (craquelé) upon close inspection, confirming its status as a beautiful collector's item.
