Description from the seller
Pietro Dossola (1887-1975) - The Augury - Rare allegorical painting on an antique rural wooden container - Early 20th century
Fascinating and unusual decorative artwork by the Piedmontese painter Pietro Dossola (Viguzzolo 1887 – Florence 1975), trained at the Albertina Academy of Turin under Giacomo Grosso. The artist chose as support an ancient domestic/pastoral utensil wholly carved in wood (a bowl with a handle), transforming a poor object of rural tradition into a refined and unique painting surface. The painting, executed in oil, depicts a delicate allegorical subject in full Liberty (Art Nouveau) and Symbolist style: a naked and blindfolded female figure, personification of the Augury or Fortune, scattering flowers toward a lying child.
The work is adorned on the edge with a poetic and confidential autograph inscription by the artist in red varnish: "Sarà fortuna o no... io te l'auguro", followed by the characteristic signature "Dossola".
Historical Piedmont private collection (Piolti Family, Cuneo). The affectionate dedication on the edge testifies to the close bond between the painter and the patron of the time, making this piece an intimate, unique "capriccio d'arte" of proven historical-collecting significance.
Natural signs of age are present on the support, which enhance its rustic charm and authenticity.
