Description from the seller
Vanitas with bust, skull and flowers
Oil on oval copper plate, refined allegorical composition in the taste of “vanitas”, executed with meticulous and precious painting technique typical of the northern and European tradition of the 19th century, inspired by the famous seventeenth-century Flemish and French models.
The scene, immersed in a theatrical half-light of strong romantic suggestion, presents an articulated ensemble of symbols of life’s transience: the skull in the foreground, the cut flowers, the rosary, the classical bust and the small miniaturist portrait dialogue with the iconographic repertoire of Baroque vanitas, recalling works from the Flemish area close to the sensibility of Pieter Claesz and Harmen Steenwijck, reinterpreted here with sentimental accents characteristic of nineteenth-century Romanticism.
Particularly elegant is the lighting rendition: the metallic reflections of the vase and the copper surface emerge from the dark background with soft veils, while the warm tones of the roses and the sculptural flesh create a refined chromatic balance. The choice of copper plate as support gives the painting brightness, precision of detail and tonal depth, features highly sought after in educated cabinet production.
The work is enhanced by its original or contemporaneous wooden frame, carved and gilded, oval in shape, with an elegant inner beaded edge, an element that further enhances the antique character of the whole and underlines its suitability for a collection or studiolo.
