Scena di corteggiamento, an 18th‑century oil painting on glass by Italian school, Italy, unsigned, in good condition, 21 × 28 cm, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Rare oil painting on glass from the second half of the 18th century depicting a gallant scene in good condition.
The work has its original glass and the frame is contemporaneous.
In the 18th century, painting on glass was a technique that allowed the realization of refined works, especially in Piedmont, where biblical subjects such as the 'Saint Paul Fed by the Raven' and the 'Baptism of Christ' have been documented. The difficulty of this technique lay in handling the brush on a surface as smooth as glass, different from canvas, and it required precision in execution.
Technique: Painting on glass was a complex technique that required skill and precision.
Subjects: Among the most common subjects were religious and biblical themes, as in the case of the two Piedmontese paintings mentioned.
Examples: A specific example from the 18th century, found in Palazzolo Acreide and dating to 1791, is the work 'Miracle in vitro'.
Difficulty: The smooth and slippery surface of the glass made applying color more difficult than on canvas.
