Antique Piedmont table from the late 19th century (ca. 1850–1900) in solid walnut with a removable top, two drawers, and measuring 112 cm deep, 70 cm wide, and 77 cm high, in good used condition with age‑related marks.
Description from the seller
Piedmontese table from the second half of the 19th century. Solid walnut wood and poplar with a removable top and with a drawer.
The piece has undergone two restorations. The first, very limited, in the 1990s at the joinery level where internal reinforcements were added. The second in May 2026 with a restoration aimed at enhancing the antiquity of the furniture.
The table has undergone the following restoration activities:
- stripping
- two treatments with anti-termite and a 3-week wait wrapped in a plastic chamber
- filling tarred holes and a crack that had insinuated itself in the top. Filling carried out with rabbit glue and Bologna plaster for the termite holes and with strong glue and Bologna plaster for the crack.
- sanding
- strengthening the bottom of the furniture and the raw parts with a consolidant
- staining with walnut mordant
- recasing the drawer with Varese paper and the second internal drawer
- varnishing with shellac (first pass brushed and three passes with a pad for gloss)
- polishing finished with encaustic
Typical example of late 1800s furniture from Piedmontese farmhouses, with a size difficult to find and smaller than standard tables. The table presents legs turned and slightly bulging with a baluster and rings in line with the local production of the place and time. The top consists of 3 boards joined together while the drawer features a wooden knob. The top is removable and provides access to a second inner drawer lined. The irregular color, denoted by lighter and darker areas, is due to the previous uneven work caused by the woodworms and, probably, the humidity to which this table was subjected for many years. While the boards and side planks are walnut, the legs are presumably poplar.
