Decorative glazed ceramic tile in antique style from Spain, circa 1750–1800, framed in a natural wood frame, measuring 48 cm high, 30 cm wide and 5 cm deep, featuring a militarily attired male figure holding a geometric instrument, and described as in good used condition with minor signs of age; titled Oficios Antiguos.
Description from the seller
This painted tile has that tranquil, solemn presence that only artisanal pieces from the eighteenth century offer, when ceramics were both a narrative medium and an ornamental object rich in craft. The male figure, depicted in military attire of the period — blue coat with gold braids, light trousers, tall boots, and a hat adorned with a plume — appears poised in a precise gesture, almost ritual, holding a geometric instrument that evokes measurement, cartography, or military engineering. That detail is not accidental: in eighteenth-century iconography, these instruments symbolize order, science, and mastery of territory, values very present in Enlightenment culture.
The painting, made with glazes on fired clay, preserves that firm, direct stroke typical of popular workshops: bold outlines, clean colors, absence of complex backgrounds to focus all attention on the figure. The artist works with an economy of means that does not detract from expressiveness; on the contrary, the figure gains an almost emblematic presence, as if he were a character from a series of trades or estates.
The wooden frame, with visible grain and warm tone, acts as a perfect counterpoint: it frames the piece, dignifies it, and makes it an autonomous object, ready to hang as a small fragment of material history. The combination of painted ceramic and natural wood reinforces that sense of an antique, domestic object, thought to accompany daily life.
Overall, it is a decorative ornament that breathes eighteenth century from every angle: artisanal craft, Enlightenment iconography, expressive simplicity, and a discreet elegance that still works today with the same force.
Tracked shipment and good packaging.
