Bronze apothecary mortar with a brown patina – Early Modern period – 17th century

Stunning pharmacy or kitchen mortar cast in bronze, dating from the 17th century (Early Modern period).
This collectible object appeals with its sobriety and sturdiness, hallmarks of the working tools of apothecaries of the Ancien Régime. It features an inverted bell-shaped body (conical) with a very flared neck and a molded base on a stable pedestle.
The body is flanked by two side handles pierced with a circular hole, alternating with two vertical relief buttresses, serving both as structural decorative elements and as reinforcement for grip during pounding.
