Description from the seller
Object: Sacred altar candlestick / church candeLabra (unique piece)
Style / Period: Historicism in the Baroque style (Neobaroque)
Estimated period: Late 19th century (c. 1870–1900)
Country of origin: Western Europe, presumably France
Material: Hand-carved solid wood, traditional chalk ground (sizing/poliment), real leaf gold gilding (gold leaf)
For sale is an imposing and elegantly proportioned altar candlestick from the Historicism era (late 19th century), crafted in the sumptuous Baroque style.
The candelabrum impresses with its classic, sacred architecture: a richly ornamented, fluted shaft, interrupted by prominent nodi (thickenings), transitioning into an intricately designed base with plastically worked reliefs (Acanthus leaf motifs). At the top sits the original light plate, equipped with a central metal spike to securely fix thick altar or stump candles.
The object is an outstanding example of traditional sacred craft of its time. Because it is made of wood and features a hollow/slender construction, this stately 56 cm high candlestick weighs only 564 grams – an important authenticity feature compared with heavy metal reproductions.
