Vintage bookends carved from ebony – hand-carved elephants with secret compartment

For sale is a rare pair of decorative bookends made from solid dark ebony. These collectibles are carefully hand-carved and styled in the classic Art Deco fashion of the 1950s and 1960s.

Each bookend features an integrated secret compartment. It is exposed by sliding the book spine to the side – ideal for small treasures like gold, silver, or gemstones.
Ornamental: 17/20/9. Working tool.
The elephant figures are adorned with light inlays, often made of bone or ivory. The delicate beadwork and high-quality workmanship make them a striking addition to any bookshelf. They also work well as decoration on a side table.

Authentic vintage condition with a beautiful patina. They are heavy and sturdy and ideal for a bookshelf or an elegant desk. One elephant is missing a tusk.

Anglo-Indian/Sri Lankan (Ceylon) style, circa mid-20th century.

A unique piece for lovers of elephants, colonial style, or unusual decor!
