Description from the seller

Authentic and elegant ancient Dan-Yacouba mask, Ivory Coast, with striking presence

A remarkable sculptural intensity, between purity of lines and expressive power

Dan-Yacouba mask, Ivory Coast, Montagnes region (Man – Biankouma). An anthropomorphic mask of great formal elegance, belonging to one of the most sought-after stylistic corpora in West Africa.

Of remarkable sobriety, this mask is distinguished by the perfect balance of its volumes and mastery of its construction. The face, oval and taut, is structured by a marked central nasal ridge that divides the composition with authority. The narrow eyes, in fine horizontal slits, give the gaze an intense, contained, almost inward look, typical of the most refined Dan masks.

The mouth, half-open and powerfully modeled, introduces a subtle expressive tension, between restraint and presence. It gives the face a living dimension, almost inhabited, reinforcing the embodied character of the piece.

The surface bears a deep, lustrous patina in brown and black hues, revealing ancient and repeated use. Areas of wear, delicately softened, testify to prolonged ritual manipulations. This patina, homogeneous and dense, fully contributes to the aesthetic quality of the work.

The purity of the lines, the reduction of forms to the essential, and the silent strength radiating from this mask find clear echoes in the explorations of European avant-gardes. As with some 20th-century sculptors, the simplification of volumes does not diminish power; it concentrates it. This type of Dan-Yacouba mask thus sits among the forms that deeply influenced the modern gaze on sculpture.

In its original context, this mask was used during social and initiatory performances, embodying spirits or specific roles within the community. Worn, animated, it became a full-fledged actor, revealing its complete dimension in movement and dance.

Provenance: private Swiss collection.
