Description from the seller

Very beautiful Kpan Baoulé mask – Côte d’Ivoire

Culture: Baulé (Baoulé)
Country: Côte d’Ivoire
Name: Mask facial
Ethnic name: Kpan

refined and very elegant Baoulé Kpan mask, finely carved in dense wood with a superb patina, revealing the full artistic mastery of the Baoulé sculptors of Côte d’Ivoire. This type of mask ranks among the most refined expressions of West African classical art, appreciated for the balance of its volumes, the delicacy of its lines, and its deep aesthetic strength.

The face, elongated and perfectly balanced, presents sober and powerful features at once. Half-closed eyes, typical of Baoulé aesthetics, express calm, self-control, and spiritual inwardness. The straight and slender nose harmoniously extends the central line of the face, while the discreet mouth accentuates this impression of noble, silent serenity.

The central-lobed hairstyle, admirably worked, gives the mask a sculptural presence that is particularly elegant. The striped disc that crowns the head creates a remarkable graphic play and reinforces the verticality of the whole. The scarification keloids on the forehead as well as the fine triangular marks on the cheeks testify to the traditional aesthetic and identitary codes of the Baoulé peoples, where beauty, status, and spirituality were intimately linked.

The hollowed-back of the mask shows a fine antiquity of use as well as a deep inner patina, while the outer surface presents a warm, silky luster obtained over time, through handling and successive ritual applications. This ancient patina, with deep dark brown nuances, beautifully emphasizes the reliefs of the face and reveals the quality of the wood used.

Artistic and cultural importance

Baoulé masks occupied an important place in traditional ceremonies and dances. Beyond their ritual function, they embody a particularly advanced aesthetic search, specific to Baoulé art, often considered one of the peaks of classical African sculpture.

The refinement of this mask recalls why the arts of Côte d’Ivoire left a deep mark on major artists and collectors of the 20th century. Through the purity of its forms and the sophistication of its composition, this work is part of the tradition of objects capable of dialoguing as well with ancient art as with the most demanding contemporary interiors.

An authentic, harmonious and decorative piece, uniting formal beauty, sculptural presence, and true antiquity.

Provenance: former French private collection.
