Aquamarine is the blue variety of the silicate mineral beryl and thus crystallizes, like it, in the hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition Be3Al2[Si6O18].

Its blue color is due to trace inclusions of two- and three-valent iron ions (Fe2+ and Fe3+) in various lattice positions. As an allochromatic (foreign-colored) mineral, the streak color of aquamarine is always white. The color named after the gemstone is a vivid greenish-blue, but pale blue to dark blue beryl are also called aquamarine.

Because of its high Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 and its often well-formed, clear crystals, aquamarine is primarily processed into gemstones for jewelry.
