Malachite, also known as copper patina as well as berg-green or copper green, is a mineral from the class of “carbonates and nitrates” with the chemical composition Cu2[(OH)2|CO3][4]. Chemically it is thus a basic copper carbonate.
Malachite crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, but very rarely forms visible crystals with a needle-like to prismatic habit. It is usually found in massive or botryoidal, banded aggregates in pure green hues, from pale to dark green.
Already Pliny the Elder (23/24–79) described malachite in his Naturalis Historia. The name derives from the Latin molochitis, probably from the Greek word μαλάχη, in classical Greek pronounced maláchē, meaning “mallow.” The color of the stone is said to resemble the rich green of leaves.
In ancient Greece, in ancient Egypt, and in the Roman Empire, the mineral was exceptionally popular. The Egyptians carved various works from malachite, such as amulets and scarabs, and processed the finely ground mineral into expressive eyeshadow. That malachite, contrary to earlier assumptions, was not the basis of the green color in wall paintings in ancient Egyptian tombs, this now seems very likely due to newer research.
