2. Detailed Art-Historical Classification
Origin & Style:
The hallmarking corresponds to the traditional German marking standards of the 20th century. The absence of the imperial Reichsopferstempel (crescent and crown) while the prominent “HANDARBEIT” stamp is used suggests a renowned German silversmith manufactory (for example from the historic silver hubs Hanau or Schwäbisch Gmünd) that produced this set as a high-end commission or small series. Stylistically the ensemble is to be classified as Neo-Rococo. The floral decor with vividly worked rose blossoms, leaves, and the curved, shell-like volute borders closely follows classical 18th-century models and calls to mind the popular “Hildesheim Rose” style.
Age:
The set was created in the period between 1930 and 1970. During this time, the demand for historizing, opulent silver castings and chasing in upscale German bourgeois society experienced a renaissance, as they perfectly combined traditional craftsmanship and a familial display of status.
Quality & Craftsmanship:
This is first-rate craftsmanship. The walls of the sugar bowl and milk jug, as well as the rim of the tray, were formed in elaborate chasing and repoussé work. A particular quality feature is the original interior gilding (vermeil). Historically, this served not only a sumptuous appearance but also effectively protected the silver from tarnish caused by contact with fruit acids, milk, or sugar and prevented flavor interference.
Condition:
The condition of the ensemble is to be described as excellent and collectible. The silver shows a superb, fresh luster without deep scratches, dents, or wear. The floral relief remains sharply defined and not worn flat. Notably, the interior gilding is absolutely rich, evenly covering and free from the usual cleaning or wear traces. This indicates that the set was for decades almost exclusively a display-piece in vitrines.
