"Photography can only represent the present. Once photographed, the subject becomes part of the past."
(Berenice Abbott)
New, mint, unread - COLLECTOR'S COPY.
Berenice Abbott was born in Springfield, Ohio in 1898 and was a prominent figure in 20th century American photography. Abbott moved from Paris to New York in 1921 and, after a few false starts, was hired by her friend Man Ray in 1923. Man Ray was looking for an assistant who knew absolutely nothing about photography to teach him. Abbott learnt quickly and was able to take her first photographs within a year. Her first solo exhibition in 1926 was a success, and over the years Abbott mastered an incredible variety of subjects. Highlights of her career include the monumental project Changing New York (1935-1938), the documentation of rural America including U.S. Highway 1 from Maine to Florida, the photographic interpretation of phenomena in nature and science, the establishment of Eugène Atget's reputation, and the founding of the first academic photography programme in the United States.
