Description from the seller

Ivory Coast
Agni
Wood and beads
Height 500mm + 3mm metal base
Width: 250mm
Depth: 105mm.

1. The Agni stylistic specifics on this piece
If refinement recalls Akan art in the broad sense, several details point very precisely to Agni craftsmanship (notably from the Sanwi or Djuablin regions):

The monumental hairstyle and braiding treatment: The large sculpted braids that frame the head in a voluminous way and fall downward are a classic mark of high hair distinction among noble-ranked Agni women.

The annulated neck and scarifications: The very long neck, marked by deep horizontal folds, expresses here the apex of the Agni beauty canon, symbol of grace and wealth. The small vertical geometric incisions on the cheeks and chin are traditional identity marks of this people.

The ornamentation with beads: The accumulation of multicolored seed beads around the neck and hips is a fundamental Akan practice. Among the Agni, the color and arrangement of beads allowed reading the status, lineage, or spiritual function of the person or entity.

2. The ritual use among the Agni
In Agni culture, a double sculpture associated with a monoxylous container (carved from the same block) and placed on a prestige stool serves several precise uses:

The worship of twins and fertility
Among the Agni, the birth of twins is seen as a highly sacred and mystical event, sent by powers from the beyond. Double ritual figurines were commissioned to serve as a receptacle for the twins’ souls to protect them from disease or death.
The central closed pot serves as a container for offerings: pure kaolin (sacred white clay), lustral water, or preparations of medicinal plants were placed there to spiritually nourish the altar and attract fertility blessing to the home.

Protective spirits and shrine fetishes
This piece may have served on the altar of a priestess or an Agni diviner (called Comian or Komianda). The female figures then act as guardians of a force or a secret medicine contained in the central vase. The fact that they are seated on a traditional Akan bench underscores their royal, noble, or ancestral status.

In summary, this is a major piece that superbly illustrates Akan prestige and devotional statuary from Ivory Coast.
