Chinese letter box / document box – Canton, late 19th century

Beautiful and decorative Chinese letter box from Canton (Guangzhou), dating from the late 19th century. This special casket is made of wood and richly decorated with finely carved relief panels depicting traditional Chinese figures in a landscape. The slanted lid and the elegant design give the object a characterful appearance.

The interior features multiple compartments, originally intended for storing letters, documents, or correspondence. The exterior is finished with gracefully carved floral and vine motifs, typical of Cantonese export craftsmanship from the late Qing period. On the front there is an original key plate; the key is missing.

An attractive collectible that is both functional and decorative and well-suited to a collection of Asian art, antique writing implements, or Chinese export art.

Condition
