Description from the seller
This is a drawing by Leo Gestel in which a park landscape is depicted, with in the background a boat and various figures in the scene. Leendert (Leo) Gestel (Woerden, 22 November 1881 – Hilversum, 26 November 1941) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and bookbinding designer, and is regarded as one of the most important innovators of modern art in the Netherlands.
Gestel initially developed a luminist style, which he applied to his early landscapes around Woerden. In the years that followed he experimented with various modern movements, including Cubism, Expressionism and Fauvism. His work is characterized by a strong sensitivity to color, light and composition. Through this ongoing artistic development Gestel took a prominent place within the Dutch avant-garde of the first half of the twentieth century. His oeuvre is currently in numerous Dutch and international museum collections.
