Description from the seller
Beautiful sculpture depicting the head of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius from the second century AD. The work is crafted with ancient sculpting techniques in Carrara marble powder.
The work was found in the ancient Roman city of Tarraco (Tarragona, today in Spain). This head represents the emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius. He succeeded Antoninus Pius, culminating in the so-called Golden Age of the Roman Empire, in office between the years 161–180 A.D. His historical philosophical education allowed him to face a difficult realm, marked by invasions, plagues, and treachery of his generals. He carried out administrative reforms for the benefit of the most needy sectors of society. During the hard military campaigns, he wrote his philosophical work in Greek, “Meditations.”
The original piece is kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, in Spain, in the ancient Roman city.
The indicated dimensions are inclusive of the base, if present.
