Description from the seller
commemorative liturgical cup in gilt brass – Spain, 1949
Elegant and meaningful gilded-brass liturgical cup, dated with certainty to May 1949 thanks to the inscription engraved along the edge of the foot. It is an object that combines devotional value with historical-documentary significance, witness to a specific religious occasion that took place in the postwar period in the Iberian context.
The cup’s silhouette is sober and harmonious, inspired by traditional models used in Catholic churches during the first half of the 20th century. The bowl features a broad, slightly flared profile, completely gilded on the inside according to the liturgical prescriptions of the era. The central knop, elegantly contoured, ensures aesthetic and functional balance, while the circular foot is adorned with a refined raised geometric decorative band with a dotted background, an element typical of ecclesiastical production in the Forties.
Particularly interesting is the hand-engraved dedication on the edge of the base:
"M.C.F. y A. de Uña – Mayo 1949"
The inscription, in Spanish, suggests private commissioning or a votive donation. The presence of the conjunction "y" ("and") suggests the involvement of two individuals or families, probably benefactors who offered the cup to a church, chapel, or religious community on the occasion of a special celebration, a first Mass, a priestly anniversary, or a particularly meaningful devotional event.
The manufacture appears meticulous and executed with traditional techniques. The surface retains a pleasant patina of time that enhances its authenticity without compromising the legibility of the inscription or the overall aesthetic appeal. The cup presents as an interesting example of postwar liturgical furnishing, capable of narrating a precise story through its personalized dedication.
From a collectible standpoint, it is particularly valuable precisely for the presence of the original inscription, an element that transforms a common liturgical object into an individual and irrepeatable historical testimony.
