Black opals, like their differently colored counterparts, occur as rounded to knobby masses with no visible crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the polishing of the stone itself. A characteristic for this form of opals is their opalescence, which shines with intense rainbow colors. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their distinctive shimmer is due to water inclusions within the interior of the mineral.
