Description from the seller
Robert Mapplethorpe (1987 PARCO Japanese Edition)
This is a rare Japanese edition of Robert Mapplethorpe, published by PARCO in Tokyo in 1987.
The book presents a carefully selected overview of Robert Mapplethorpe's photographic work and was produced as part of PARCO's influential contemporary art publishing series. The publication contains approximately 90 pages and features a collection of some of Mapplethorpe's most celebrated photographs, including portraits, floral studies, self-portraits, and figure photography. The text is presented in both Japanese and English.
Included are photographs of notable figures such as Patti Smith, Philip Glass, Sam Wagstaff, and Lisa Lyon, alongside Mapplethorpe's iconic flower images and black-and-white compositions. The book also contains a short biography and introductory essays, making it an excellent introduction to his artistic career.
Unlike many later retrospective publications, this early Japanese edition was published while Mapplethorpe was still at the height of his career, giving it particular historical significance for collectors of photography books and contemporary art publications. Today it has become increasingly difficult to find in good condition, especially with its original cover materials intact.
