Estimated period 1850–1900; metal finely silver-plated in Antique Napoléon III style by French manufacturer Manifattura francese, measuring 28 cm high by 14 cm square with a 14 cm depth and weighing 1068 g, featuring a central group of four hippocamps and a candle holder on a multi‑level epergne.
Description from the seller
Elegant French-made second-half-of-the-19th-century refined epergne, crafted in metal finely silver-plated. The piece stands out for its extraordinary decorative richness and for the sculptural quality of its figures, recalling the eclectic and dramatic taste typical of the period.
The structure is multi-tiered, with a square base adorned by a delicate pierced balustrade that gives visual lightness to the whole. At each corner, curved feet elegantly support the entire composition.
A central, highly impactful element is the sculptural group composed of four hippocampi, hybrid creatures with sinuous and scaly bodies, reminiscent of horses or mythological seahorses. Their tails coil upward in harmony, merging with the central body of the candlestick. The heads, finely chased, display lively expressions and precise details, with manes in motion and mouths slightly open, bringing the scene to life.
Above them rises a shaft, characterized by an elegant vertical groove and enriched by a central decorative element with a grotesque face, typical of the nineteenth-century ornamental repertoire. This mask adds a theatrical and mysterious touch to the object.
The upper part presents a cup—perhaps a candlestick holder—supported by four decorative arms in the form of winged creatures or stylized dragons, which extend outward with great dynamism. The rim of the cup is finely worked with beaded motifs. The upper element is missing.
The surface shows a natural patina with fascinating iridescences, a testament to time and a guarantee of authenticity.
It bears light damage and small, barely visible breakages as highlighted in the photos.
The photos are an integral part of the description.
