Description from the seller
Olympus-S Electro Set + G.Zuiko 4.2cm 1:1.8 — Classic 1960s Working 35mm Rangefinder with Fast 7-Element Lens, Clean Optics
A working Olympus-S Electro Set — a beautifully made Japanese 35mm rangefinder camera from the early 1960s, fitted with the highly regarded fast G.Zuiko (7-element Gauss-type) 4.2cm f/1.8 fixed lens and a Copal leaf shutter. Introduced in 1962 as a successor to the Olympus 35-S, the Olympus-S features a coupled rangefinder, a bright combined viewfinder/rangefinder window, and an in-finder exposure meter system. This same body design served as the direct ancestor of the legendary Olympus 35 SP. A real classic Japanese rangefinder with one of the fastest fixed lenses Olympus ever made for a fixed-lens 35mm camera, and with notably clean optics.
Including:
- Camera body (Olympus-S Electro Set)
- Fixed G.Zuiko 4.2cm 1:1.8 lens (built-in)
(Battery not included)
Appearance:
Vintage cosmetic wear consistent with age (1960s camera). Some patina and small spots on the chrome top plate; the leatherette body covering is intact with no peeling. The viewfinder and rangefinder windows are clear. No major dents or serious damage.
Function:
35mm coupled-rangefinder camera with Copal leaf shutter (B, 1 s – 1/500 s) plus "A" auto position, bright viewfinder with combined-image coupled rangefinder, in-finder exposure meter display, fast f/1.8 lens, mechanical self-timer, hot shoe / cold accessory shoe, and flash sync (M/X).
Confirmed during inspection:
- Shutter: fires correctly
- Film advance lever: operates
- Rewind crank: operates
Other features (shutter release, shutter speed ring, aperture ring f/1.8 – f/16, rangefinder coupling, self-timer, ASA dial, hot shoe) are present on the camera. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition.
Battery note:
The Olympus-S Electro Set's built-in exposure meter was originally designed for a small mercury button battery (PX625 / MR-9 1.35 V, no longer manufactured). Modern replacements such as PX625G (1.5 V alkaline), WeinCell MRB625 (1.35 V zinc-air), or LR44 / SR44 with a voltage adapter can be used.
The shutter and all main mechanical operations work fully independently of the battery. Battery is not included; please prepare one separately.
Optical system (lens):
G.Zuiko 4.2cm 1:1.8 — a fast seven-element (the "G" designation indicates a 7-element Gauss-type design) Olympus lens, one of the fastest fixed lenses ever fitted to an Olympus 35mm rangefinder, widely praised for its sharpness, low-light capability, and beautiful rendering. The same f/1.8 lens design is famously found on the highly sought-after Olympus 35 SP. The optics on this example are clean — no fungus, no haze, no balsam separation, and no major scratches visible. A small amount of dust may be present but does not affect image quality. Aperture blades are clean and operate correctly.
Shutter / film chamber:
The Copal leaf shutter blades appear clean. The film chamber and pressure plate are clean overall.
Notes:
The Olympus-S Electro Set is historically significant as the direct ancestor of the celebrated Olympus 35 SP, and a sought-after fixed-lens rangefinder in its own right thanks to its fast f/1.8 G.Zuiko lens. With its clean optical condition, this example is ready to load with film and shoot. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition. As this is a 1960s camera, occasional servicing (CLA) is recommended for long-term reliable use.
