Description from the seller
Wood Architecture: Extendable Table 'Mou' – Design by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni
We present at auction the Mou table, a masterpiece of aesthetic engineering designed by the legendary couple Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni. This specimen stands out for the noble combination of the warmth of walnut wood and the graphical rigor of the black laminate, a variant that underscores the project’s modernity and its architectural versatility.
Design and Functional Innovation
The Mou table is a perfect synthesis between outstanding cabinetmaking and mechanical innovation:
Joints Geometry: The structure is characterized by the iconic integration of the legs into the profile of the top. This construction detail, unmistakable signature of the Scarpa duo, creates a formal continuity that transforms a structural element into the main decorative motif.
Extension System: The top opens with a fluid and precise movement to reveal a central black-laminate extension. This insert not only increases the table’s functionality but also creates a sophisticated color contrast with the grain of the walnut.
Rigour and Durability: Designed with the philosophy of "building well", the Mou table combines the wisdom of artisanal tradition with Molteni’s technological experimentation.
Lot Conditions: Original Charm and Integrity
The lot is presented in excellent used condition, preserving its structural solidity intact:
Surfaces: The walnut wood has been treated with professional products that revived its natural grain. The top shows slight signs of use, consistent with the piece’s age and history, attesting to its originality without compromising its elegance.
Stability: The structure is perfectly robust and stable; the wood retains a warm and even patina.
Mechanics: The sliding system and opening mechanisms have been checked: the movement is smooth, precise, and fully functional.
