Owl-shaped box in solid 0.915 silver from Madrid, Spain, dating to circa 1930–1945, with height 16.5 cm, width 8 cm, depth 9.5 cm, weight 488 g, depicting an owl, with a hinged lid and a fully silver interior; in very good condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Exceptional Spanish sculptural box made entirely in solid 915 silver in the shape of an owl, Madrid, circa 1930–1945.
Magnificent piece of Spanish artistic goldsmithing executed completely in solid silver, representing an owl with great expressiveness and an extraordinary sculptural level.
The figure opens via a discreet central hinge system, revealing an interior compartment fully lined in silver, originally conceived as:
• luxury box,
• pipe-touch (tabaquera),
• container for small precious objects,
• or an elegant desk object.
The piece shows outstanding artistic quality:
• plumage worked entirely by hand,
• deep and highly detailed textures,
• sculptural legs,
• beak polished in contrast,
• and eyes made with cabochons in an amber tone that give it an extraordinarily vivid expression.
The owl, a traditional symbol of wisdom and knowledge in European art, was a motif highly appreciated in early and mid-20th-century decorative fine metalwork.
The work bears Spanish hallmarks, including a star corresponding to silver of high fineness, compatible with Spanish 915 silver.
In style, technique and execution quality, the piece can be attributed to Madrid luxury goldsmithing from approximately 1930–1945.
This is a highly decorative object with great visual presence, belonging to the universe of the so-called objets de vertu, intended for refined clients and collectors of exclusive pieces.
Measurements:
• height: 16.5 cm
• length: 9.5 cm
• width: 8 cm
Weight:
• 488 g
Condition: very good, with an elegant noble patina typical of antique silver.
A rare sculptural piece that is highly collectible.
