Description from the seller

It's a box from the 19th century in full Napoleon III style, and it shows it from the first glance: that deep, bright black, almost lacquered, which serves as a theatrical curtain for the decoration in gilded brass and the flashes of mother-of-pearl embedded in the heraldic area. It is a piece that blends luxury, contrast, and a taste for meticulous ornamentation, very typical of French cabinetmaking and of the productions inspired by it during the second half of the 19th century.

The lid features a symmetrical, elegant design, where the gold motifs —fine, curved, almost drawn with a pen— unfold like metal lace over the dark background. In the center, the heraldry with mother-of-pearl introduces an iridescent shine that changes with the light, an exquisite detail that was common in prestigious boxes of the era, intended for jewelry, documents, or small personal objects.

The front preserves its keyhole escutcheon, discreet but perfectly integrated into the composition, recalling that these boxes were not only decorative, but also containers of intimacy. Upon opening, the purple lining appears, a soft interior, almost theatrical, that contrasts with the exterior sobriety. That deep color — between violet and plum — was highly valued in the 19th century for its association with elegance and luxury.

Overall, it is a piece that combines sophistication, craftsmanship, and an air of mystery, typical of the objects that populated the drawing rooms and dressing tables of the Second Empire.

Certified shipping and careful packing.
