Originally, the mask, called grè in Bété, is a traditional entity from the mountainous western region. The glè derives from the word gla of the Guere people. It has undergone transformations throughout its journey.
The Bété masks usually appear during joyful or sorrowful occasions.
As there are no specific traditional festivals, the masks are invoked during celebrations.
The Bété African masks also appear on days of large gatherings, especially during community parades.
