Description from the seller
l set Bastiano, designed by Tobia Scarpa for Gavina in the late sixties, represents one of the absolute masterpieces of Italian design of the 20th century. This composition, consisting of two armchairs and two three-seat sofas, embodies perfectly the sobriety of elegance, functionality, and artisanal quality that made Gavina’s production famous.
The structure is made of solid wood lacquered in the original white of the era, with a glossy, deep finish that enhances the purity of the lines. The legs, slightly tapered, and the essential yet robust frame give the system extraordinary visual lightness, while maintaining the structural solidity typical of great design classics. The contrast between the pristine white of the structure and the warm velvet of the cushions creates a visually refined dialogue.
The cushions, completely new and carefully redone, are upholstered in a luxurious olive-brown velvet of the highest quality. This warm and sophisticated shade, between olive green and chocolate brown, gives the set an elegant and contemporary chromatic depth, while respecting the original spirit of the project. The velvet has a soft, luminous hand, with a changing sheen that shifts slightly with the light, lending the piece a lively and sensuous presence.
The Bastiano armchairs feature a generous and enveloping seat, with independent back and seat cushions that guarantee exceptional comfort. The three-seater sofas maintain the same harmonious proportions, offering ample space without ever appearing bulky. The clean lines, the absence of excessive armrests, and the perfect calibration of the volumes make this set extremely versatile: it integrates with elegance in both minimalist modern environments and classical or contemporary interiors.
The Bastiano set by Tobia Scarpa for Gavina is a perfect example of timeless design. The combination of the original white 1960s structure and the cushions redone in olive-brown velvet creates a unique piece, preserving historical authenticity while being perfectly suited for daily use today. Each element conveys care, quality, and that sense of discreet luxury that only the great masters of Italian design know how to express.
