Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Like the pink variety thulite, it is used exclusively as a gemstone.
As zoisite, tanzanite crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system and typically develop transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on the surfaces. Cleavage surfaces, by contrast, shimmer more pearly.
