Oil on canvas painting Ecce Homo by Scuola austriaca (XVIII), dated 1792, in the Austrian Baroque style, depicting a religious subject; unsigned, with frame, 46 × 37 cm including the frame, in good condition, provenance Jakobskirche Vienna with a 1996 conservation restoration.
Description from the seller
Intense and evocative oil on canvas painting from the late 18th century, depicting the sacred iconography of Ecce Homo. The work stands out for its strong devotional impact and rigorous technical execution, typical of the Germanic cultural area of the late eighteenth century.
The Savior is portrayed in half-length with the crown of thorns and a finely draped red robe. The expressiveness of the face, characterized by a magnetic and mournful gaze directed at the observer, shows excellent anatomical rendering and chiaroscuro. At the bottom of the canvas, a trompe-l'oeil cartouche bears a contemporaneous inscription in German in Gothic letters (Fraktur): "Der von den Sünden beleidigte Jesus" (Jesus affronted by sins).
Provenance:
The back of the painting carries an archival label documenting its important historical provenance from Jakobskirche in Vienna (Wien) dated 1792, as well as certifying a restorative conservation carried out in 1996. Documentation that considerably enhances the lot's collectible value.
State of conservation:
The painting presents in good overall preservation. The painted layer is stable, with its original craquelure in keeping with the era. The work is enhanced by a beautiful antique carved and gilded wooden frame with raised geometric motifs, ready to be hung.
