Description from the seller
Smoking Chair “Fumeuse” in Walnut – Late 1800s / Early 1900s – Mythological Engraving and Original Tapestry.
Splendid and rare example of a smoking chair (historically known as a Fumeuse or Smoker's Bow Chair), made in solid walnut wood between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The chair stands out for an exceptional piece of artisanal carving on the backrest and for the preservation of its period textile elements. A piece of great charm, perfect for collectors, antique lovers, or as an exclusive furnishing element for studies, lounges, or relaxation corners.
Main Features & Artistic Details:
The Backrest: Features a spectacular central relief depicting the face of a Faun/Satyr (mythical creature traditionally linked to the pleasures of life, wine, and conviviality), framed by two long crossed pipes, an unmistakable symbol of the chair’s original function.
The Seat and Arm Rest: Upholstered with its original small-point tapestry. The seat fabric depicts geometric and floral motifs that evoke smoking-related elements (a central vase/ember bowl and crossed pipes).
The Tassel: The upper headrest/arm support is enriched by a dense original tassel in yellow/ochre trim, typical of the eclectic late 19th-century style.
The Frame: Front legs expertly turned and a molded and carved lower frieze with floral motifs.
• Measurements
Height: 78 cm.
Seat: 65 x 54 cm.
From floor to seat: 45 cm.
Historical Notes and Era Habits
Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pipe and cigar smoking was a true social male ritual, strictly separated from the spaces frequented by ladies to prevent fabrics and garments from absorbing strong odors.
The “Fumeuse” chair was born precisely in private gentlemen’s clubs, billiard rooms, and smoking rooms of noble and upper-middle-class palaces.
How it was used
The era’s habit involved a very particular way of sitting, “backwards” to today:
The gentleman sat facing the backrest (astride).
The upper part of the backrest, suitably padded, served as a comfortable support for the arms and elbows.
The position allowed smoking the pipe in total relaxation. Often these chairs were placed near low smoking tables where tabatières, matches, and ashtrays were set down.
Condition of the Item
Structure: Solid and stable; the walnut wood shows a beautiful antique patina. Small and normal signs of aging attesting to authenticity.
Textile/Tapestry: Given that this is the original period upholstery, it displays fascinating historical wear that increases its collectible value (as visible in the photos).
Finishes: Original perimetral metal studs and carvings perfectly preserved, with no structural deficiencies.
Unique objects, always interesting, always in our auctions, always on Catawiki.
Due to its dimensions, shipment is not permitted. Item available for pickup at our store.”
