Description from the seller
Jurriën Marinus Beek (1879-1965)
The Seine
Total size: 53 x 72 cm
Dimensions Canvas: 40 x 60 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Netherlands
This oil painting on canvas is a work by the Dutch artist Jurriën Marinus Beek (Arnhem, 1879 – The Hague, 1965), painter and art dealer. Beek built up a versatile oeuvre in the first half of the twentieth century with landscapes, seascapes, harbor scenes, still lifes, figure studies and portraits. Around 1929 he settled in Scheveningen, where the proximity to the sea provided an important source of inspiration for his work. Later he moved to the center of The Hague, where he remained active as an artist and art dealer until his death. His paintings are valued for their polished compositions, atmospheric color use and decisive observation of people and surroundings.
Although Beek is best known for his depictions of Dutch landscapes and maritime scenes, this painting forms a particular exception within his oeuvre. The work shows a view of Paris, a subject that occurs only rarely in his production. It is precisely for this reason that this painting occupies a special place within his work. Despite the deviation in location, the qualities that characterize his oeuvre remain clearly recognizable: a sensitive rendering of atmosphere, a harmonious composition and a keen attention to light and architectural details. The painting attests to Beek's versatility as an artist and shows that his interests extended beyond the Dutch coast- and cityscapes for which he was mainly known.
The painting can be viewed at Art Dumay. It is possible to have it professionally cleaned by a restorer who is affiliated with Restauratoren Nederland, the professional association for restorers.
