Icon - George the Dragonslayer - Wood

The compositional model of our icon is guided by two diagonals (the saint’s spear and the silhouette of the horse), while a sense of elegance emanates from the figure of Saint George. Standing outside the palace door, the princess, clothed in a regal mantle lined with ermine and with her head crowned, holds a white tether tied around the dragon’s neck. In the background, hills and the city with towers and pinnacles. The image is completed by the Christ the Blessing, who appears high among the clouds, with the Gospel in his hand, while an angel sent by him flies to place a crown on Saint George’s head. In the frame, stylized, are the two brothers, Lauro and Floro, saints and martyrs much loved by the Russians.
