A Roman bronze appliqué of the head of Medusa (Gorgoneion), 1st-3rd century A.D.

Finely modelled in high relief, depicting the fearsome face of Medusa with wide staring eyes, broad nose, open mouth and prominent cheeks. The hair is rendered as writhing serpents surrounding the head. The reverse is concave with remains of attachment points, indicating it was used as a decorative mount for a vessel, furniture, door, shield or military equipment. The surface shows a dark brown to black patina with attractive green highlights.

Depth: 2.8 cm.
