Description from the seller
DECORATIVE BAGA DRUM
The Baga live along the Atlantic coast of the Republic of Guinea, in West Africa. They form one of the smallest ethnic groups in Guinea, and have lived relatively isolated from their neighbors because of the vast marshes that surround them. They have, however, left a rich artistic heritage, which includes crests, figurative sculptures, masks, and everyday objects such as musical instruments. This drum, named timba, and matimbo in neighboring groups, was played during the initiation ceremonies of members of the A-Tekan association, on the occasion of the funeral of its members or also for the marriage of their daughters. It is by its size that this drum is distinguished from the other drums used in the A-Tekan, which requires its user to stand while playing the instrument. It also figures in the initiation into the secrets of pharmacopoeia. The shell is stretched with a skin, and its flanks are enhanced by zones of contrasting colors. It is supported by female figures and a freestanding sculpture depicting a horse.
