Description from the seller
Antique Junghans Architectural Mantel Clock - 24-Hour Dial - Germany, ca. 1890-1910
A beautiful and highly collectible antique German architectural mantel/bracket clock, manufactured by the renowned maker Junghans between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This clock features a beautifully crafted solid walnut/oak case designed in the classic historicist/architectural style, complete with turned side columns and delicate decorative elements.
A fantastic feature of this specific model is that all three original top turned pinnacles are present and intact (currently detached but included, ready to be refitted).
Another rare and remarkable detail is the original brass-rimmed dial, which features an inner ring with red 24-hour markers (13–24) alongside the standard blue Roman numerals. The authentic Junghans trademark (the 8-pointed star with the letter 'J') is clearly stamped both on the dial center and engraved on the heavy brass mechanical movement plate inside.
The clock utilizes a traditional count-wheel striking system on a coiled gong.
Condition Report (For Restoration):
The clock is sold as a restoration project (for parts or repair), offering great potential for collectors and clocksmiths:
- Mechanical: The movement is complete with its gears, springs, and pendulum, showing no major rust. However, it requires a professional thorough cleaning, degreasing of old dried oil, and fresh lubrication to be fully functional.
- Woodwork: The case is structurally sound and solid. The front architectural facade acts as a hinged door and functions properly. The wood shows a beautiful age-related patina, with minor dry edges and light wear at the base consistent with age. There is a small spot of paint flaking in the lower-left corner of the internal black background panel, which can easily be touched up.
- Dial: The original dial shows a wonderful, authentic aged patina with light oxidation, but all numerals and markings remain perfectly legible.
A wonderful and complete piece of German horological history, perfect for an enthusiast looking for an authentic restoration project.
