Antique French .950 silver dessert knife by Philippe Berthier, Paris, dating to the mid-19th century, with Minerva and PB marks, measuring 21 cm in length, 3 cm wide and 1 cm deep, weighing 59 g, in good used condition with minor dings on the lower handle and floral engraving on blade and handle.
Description from the seller
Antique French .950 Silver dessert cutlery. Philippe Berthier, Paris , mid-19th century.
This refined pastry knife possesses the charm of 19th-century craftsmanship, with a delicate engraved floral decoration present on both the blade and the handle.
The Minerva hallmark surrounded by an octagon certifies its high silver purity (950 thousandths), while the 'PB' mark with a bird motif corresponds to the Parisian silversmith Philippe Berthier.
The two marks, Minerva and the silversmith, are present on both the blade and the handle of the utensil, so everything is silver.
Philippe Berthier, a prolific Parisian silversmith of the Second French Empire, began his activity at 23 rue aux Ours. He later moved to Beaufort and finally to 21 rue Quincampoix.
Berthier's production mainly consisted of wine spoons, soup spoons, cups for coffee, tea, and chocolate, and their saucers, goblets, spoons, etc.
The piece up for auction is well preserved although it shows slight dings to the lower part of the handle, as can be seen in the images.
Shipped with tracking number and properly protected to prevent damage.
