Description from the seller

ATTENTION for non EU buyers: No shipping outside the European Union!

Black-glazed lekythos
Greater Greece, 4th century BCE.

Charming ceramic lekythos with black glaze resting on a small reserved annular foot, featuring an elongated ovoid body surmounted by a softened shoulder, a slender cylindrical neck, and a broadly flared cup-shaped rim. A vertically ribbed handle links the shoulder to the neck, giving the overall form a particularly balanced silhouette.

The surface is entirely covered with a deep black glaze, still well preserved, revealing a beautiful satin shine. Fine concentric rings from the potter’s wheel remain visible under the glaze, bearing witness to the workshop’s ancient craftsmanship. Several small wear marks and shallow chips reveal the orange color of the clay, in perfect harmony with the piece’s age.

The underside of the foot, kept reserved according to Greek workshop tradition, retains the characteristic firing marks as well as the traces of turn-marks.

Lekythoi were used to contain scented oils for daily grooming, but also in funerary practices and votive deposits.

Black-glazed examples, valued for the purity of their lines, were widely produced in the workshops of Greater Greece during the 4th century BCE.

Condition: Intact. Very good overall condition with an old, even wear to the glaze, consistent with its age.

Dimensions: Height: 14 cm.

Provenance:
Public sale, Paris, 2016.
Former French private collection assembled in the 1990s.

This piece appeals with the elegance of its profile, the quality of its black glaze, and its excellent state of preservation, making it a fine example of refined utilitarian pottery produced in the workshops of Greater Greece in the 4th century BCE.

Shipped by BPOST.

An invoice and a certificate of authenticity from the expert will be provided with the object.
