Description from the seller

Edo-Bini Face Mask
Nigeria – Iyekhoriomo region

This mask stands out with a presence that is at once sober and powerful, characteristic of productions from the Edo-Bini sphere where mastery of volumes takes precedence over exuberance.

The face adopts an balanced construction dominated by a pronounced frontal stance. Almond-shaped eyes are finely hollowed, creating a gaze that is almost interiorized, while the slightly open mouth reveals a stylized dentition, providing a discreet yet real expressive tension.

The straight, structuring nose acts as a central axis, reinforcing the symmetry of the whole and guiding the gaze.

The thick, raised headdress is a determining element; it frames the face and asserts the status of the character, evoking attributes of social or spiritual distinction.

The entire mask is rhythmed by a network of geometric incised scarifications—vertical and horizontal—that animate the surface of the wood. These marks are not decorative but identitary; they refer to aesthetic and cultural codes intrinsic to the Edo groups and to their conception of beauty and belonging.

The deep, dark patina punctuated by natural highlights enhances the relief of the incisions and testifies to old use or prolonged handling, reinforcing the piece’s authenticity.

This type of mask is set within a ritual or performative context where it participates in social, religious, or initiatory ceremonies. The stylization of the face conveys less a portrait than an embodied presence—the presence of a spirit, an ancestor, or a mediating entity.

An artwork that is balanced, legible, and elegant, combining plastic strength with symbolic richness, ideal for a collection attentive to the classic forms of Nigerian art.
