Masker Mwana Pwo from the Chokwe people, Angola, dating to the mid-20th century, provenance Privécollectie, height 27 cm and width 25 cm, authentic/original, in excellent condition and sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
Phenomenal Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask.
Origin: Angola.
The age is estimated around the 1940s.
Beautiful glossy dark patina.
One of the most beautiful Chokwe masks ever!
Towards the ideal image of a beautiful young woman. TOP mask!
On the forehead you can see the typical Chingelyengelye cross scarification.
However worn by male dancers.
See the tribal photo with a dancer like that.
It is a tribal-used piece so we see the expected signs of wear that attest to the authenticity of this piece.
Dimensions: Height 27 cm. Width 25 cm. Measured without coiffure.
The lovely coiffure with hood is still there.
As well as the raffia-knotted necklace!
A fantastic appearance, the real Africa.
Part of an older collection that I could acquire in my early years as a collector.
That was since the 1980s.
Part of this I sold in recent years because I had to start shrinking my very large collection (space constraints).
The finest pieces I kept in storage but these are now also for sale.
The original collector was a Belgian trader in trucks and auto parts and tires; he had his business in Matadi in Belgian Congo before independence in 1960.
I obtained his collection in the late 1980s.
I had been collecting African art for years at that time and sometimes I obtained an entire older collection like this.
I have attached some photos of him in his tire business in Congo; they are not included but I can email them if desired.
Pedestals or stands are never included.
