Natural rhodochrosite cabochon pendant, mounted in 925 silver, from Catamarca, Argentina; dimensions about 5 x 3 x 0.5 cm and weight 25 g.
Description from the seller
Overview
There are pieces that simply adorn, and others that dominate the eye.
This natural rhodochrosite pendant belongs to the second category. Of large format, with a deep raspberry pink and white wavy veins that evoke mineral landscapes formed over millions of years, we are looking at a centerpiece jewel, not a discreet one.
2 Measurements and weight
Approximate dimensions: 5 x 3 x 0.5 cm
Total weight: 25 grams
The size and weight confirm its substantial character and solid presence.
3 Mineralogical identification
Natural rhodochrosite in a polished cabochon.
4 Chemical formula
MnCO₃ – Manganese carbonate.
5 Hardness and density
Hardness: 3.5 – 4 on the Mohs scale.
Average density: 3.5 – 3.7 g/cm³.
Values consistent with the physical behavior observed in the piece.
6 Visual and geological reading
The visible banded structure responds to manganese-rich hydrothermal processes. The interleaved white veins are typical of layer-by-layer growth, generating the characteristic wavy effect that distinguishes authentic rhodochrosite from synthetic or dyed materials.
7 History of the mineral
Since the 19th century, rhodochrosite has been one of the stones most valued by collectors for its chromatic intensity and structural uniqueness. Over time, access to high-quality material has diminished, increasing its appeal in the international market.
8 Mounting and craftsmanship
Mounted in 925 sterling silver (92.5% pure silver) with visible hallmark.
Solid bezel surrounding that protects the cabochon and provides structural balance. The metal-to-mineral ratio is carefully resolved to support a heavy-piece.
9 Hook "Buche" articulated – Brand distinction
The pendant features an articulated "buche" hook (funnel/trumpet shape), a relatively uncommon element compared to standard productions.
It allows a better drop, reduces twisting, and accommodates thick chains without stressing the structure, adding functionality and differentiation.
10 Authenticity and tests
– Does not show easy scratching with copper coin.
– Minimal reaction to weak acid.
– Internal structure coherent with natural rhodochrosite.
– Texture and weight compatible with expected density.
It is important to note that many resin or dyed-material imitations proliferate on digital platforms. This piece presents the physical characteristics typical of authentic mineral.
1 -1 Condition and provenance
Unused batch.
Old stock preserved without prior sale.
Excellent overall condition.
Probable provenance:
Due to color characteristics and banded pattern, this piece is compatible with material historically mined in Argentina, Catamarca region, an area internationally recognized for rhodochrosite with raspberry hue and well-defined white veins.
No mine certificate is available, so attribution is based on visual criteria and market typology.
1-2 Market, rarity and investment
Large rhodochrosite pieces with a defined pattern are increasingly rare. Availability of attractive material has diminished and international demand has increased the value of specimens with notable presence.
Each mineral entails human effort of extraction under complex geological conditions; recognizing that work is part of respecting the piece.
By size, weight, and visual quality, this pendant stands as a collectible piece with potential for appreciating value.
1-3 Care and maintenance
Avoid shocks and harsh chemicals.
Clean only with a soft cloth.
Store separately from harder pieces to prevent micro-scratches.
With proper care, the color intensity and the shine of the silver will remain intact for decades.
