Description from the seller
Important very fine antique white linen tablecloth, fresh and with natural sheen, typical of high-quality linen, attributed to the very early 1900s as masterful quality, a precious example of era handmade artisanal linen. The quality of the fabric and the richness of the work highlight a high-level craftsmanship, typical of traditional noble household ensembles. The tablecloth measures about 168 cm by about 253 cm and is embellished with a complex decoration, composed of embroidery, cutwork and ornamental inserts executed with extreme manual precision. The work features floral motifs, volutes, and sinuous designs that run along the central plane and along the border. Several traditional techniques are recognizable: Incised embroidery, visible in the perforated parts and in the open curved motifs, obtained by cutting and finishing the fabric by hand. Cable stitch, used to finish and elevate the ornamental contours with a three-dimensional, elegant and refined effect. Satin stitch and stem stitch, present in the small floral and decorative motifs. Ring and cutwork work, typical of the most precious pieces of the period. Needlepoint blank stitch (gigliuccio). A very complex piece executed with traditional techniques now rare. Slight natural irregularity of the stitches, the depth of the embroidery, the relief of the cord and the precision of the cuts attest to an authentic work. The tablecloth is ideal both for representational use and as an antique piece for collection or display. Included are 12 white linen napkins about 40 x 40 cm, all handmade. An interesting detail is that the napkins are not identical in size, with small variations. The conditions are excellent, with no stains, tears, yellowing, or restorations. The set is enriched by two hand-embroidered bottle-coasters (doilies) from the same era. In pure archival linen with a tight weave, each features a unique cutwork pattern and different shapes. Crochet edge with embroidered cutwork. Approximate measurements 13 x 11 cm.
