Description from the seller
Rectangular tray in lacquered black tinplate with gold - Romantic Scene - 19th Century
Elegant rectangular tray from the nineteenth-century era (19th Century), fully ascribable to the Napoleon III / Victorian style. The piece is made of black lacquered tinplate (tôle peinte / toleware) according to the ancient decorative technique of japanning, developed to imitate the precious oriental lacquers. The center is adorned with a refined bucolic and romantic scene printed in gold and bronze tones, depicting three women in nineteenth-century dresses in a flowering garden. The raised rim is decorated along the entire perimeter with an elaborate geometric and floral gilt stencil frieze, clearly inspired by Neoclassicism. The object bears neither signatures nor factory marks, a typical feature of artisanal French and English productions of the period. Lacquered and gold-decorated iron sheet
Second half of the 19th Century (circa 1860-1880)Dimensions 43 x 33 cm
Good overall condition for its age. It shows a natural patina of time with light surface scratches on the black lacquer. As highlighted in the close-up photos, there is a small, localized bloom of superficial rust on the front, near the gilded edge, which does not in any way compromise the solidity or structural integrity of the metal. A very decorative antique piece, ideal for a collection or display.
